Causes of Gastritis

Gastritis is a condition characterized by an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Read and know all about the various causes of this disorder.

What causes Gastritis?

Weakening or damaging of the protective layer of the stomach is one of the main causes of Gastritis. A mucus-lined barricade guards the wall of the stomach from the acid (or digestive juice) which is used to assimilate the food. When the barricade becomes thin or weak due to any reason, the digestive juices harm and inflame the lining of the stomach.

A number of other factors can also act as causative factors for this disease. These include:

According to medical surveys, a few medications are responsible for the occurrence of gastritis. These include:

  • Ibuprofen or naproxen (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Potassium supplements
  • Cancer chemotherapy medications
  • Aspirin, or any drug which contains aspirin
  • Prednisone (prescription steroids)
  • Iron tablets

Objects or chemicals

Consuming or swallowing a few objects and chemicals also contribute to the occurrence of Gastritis. Such objects include:

  • Foreign bodies, such as pins or paper clips
  • Corrosives, like lye or acid

The disease might also occur if the wall of the stomach of the patient gets affected by:

  • Syphilis
  • Viral infections
  • Parasites and worms
  • Tuberculosis
  • Bacterial infections, such as H pylori
  • Disorders which can lead to bladder infection or Pneumonia
  • Fungal infections
  • Worms and parasites

A number of medical conditions, which can lead to this disorder, include:

  • Pernicious anemia
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Chronic vomiting

Injured or severely ill people are more prone to the disease.

Surgical and medical conditions

Certain medical techniques make an individual susceptible to the syndrome. These include:

  • Endoscopy, wherein the inside the stomach is monitored with the help of a small tube
  • Radiation therapy for cancer patients
  • Surgical operation, in which a part of the stomach is removed

Other common causes of Gastritis include physical and mental stress. Smoking and alcohol consumption also increases susceptibility to the disease.

Types of Gastritis

According to medical surgeons, this clinical condition can be classified into two main types:

It is defined as a sudden painful swelling of the stomach lining. Such inflammation is accompanied by bleeding from the stomach mucosa. The bleeding occurs due to the damaging of the tissues by the digestive juices. The bleeding stops within 24 hours when the excessive digestive acids settle down. In 90% of all cases, the bacterium Helicoater pyloria is considered to be one of the main causes of acute gastritis.

It is characterized as an inflammation of the stomach lining which occurs steadily and continues for a prolonged period. One of the most common causes of chronic gastritis includes extended irritation arising due to infection from Helicobacter pylori bacteria, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or pernicious anemia. A few other causes of Chronic Gastritis include chronic bile reflux and disintegration of the stomach lining from aging.

Causes of Gastritis and Esophagitis

Almost every individual experiences heartburn sometime or the other. In most cases, the burning sensation is mild and causes temporary discomfort. If a person gets affected by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) and if left untreated, it can give rise to a number of complications such as narrowing esophagus or erosive esophagitis. However, medical practitioners state that hereditary GERD patients are more susceptible to erosive esophagitis. Inflammation and acidic irritation gives rise to injuries in the esophagus.
